Navigating your way through NYC with your iPhone

A native New Yorker (and new mom) Lara Serebrier Paul needed an effective and easy way to navigate her hometown, now that she had a baby in tow. Frustrated with a lack of information, Lara set out to carve her own niche in the city. She created iKidNY, the go-to app for NYC parents. Her easy to use application gives information and directions to the closest parks, indoor playspaces, museums, kid-friendly restaurants, changing tables, you name it. For those of you not residing in the Big Apple, don’t fret. Lara is hoping to roll out additional cities in the near future. But for now, Lara gave us the lowdown on some of her favorite apps:
- Exit Strategy
Exit Strategy tells you where to stand on the subway platform so that you line up with the closest entrance or exit and shave minutes off your subway ride. It’s an invaluable time-saver for busy moms. - Tales2Go
Gives you instant, on-demand and unlimited access to hundreds of great kids’ audio stories. - Around Me
Shows you all the businesses “around you”. Great for finding nearby restaurants, movie theatres, or practically anything. - CNN
Busy moms on the go don’t always have time to sit down and read the newspaper. Enjoy the “power of CNN in your hands” with videos and all. - Old MacDonald
This really is my son’s favorite! Old MacDonald provides hours, well at least minutes, of enjoyment for the little one in a modern and fun little game. - PrimoSpot
This is a must-have when driving a car in NYC. It helps you find the closest on-street parking spots and lets you know when they will become available. It also shows the nearest parking garages. - Hop Stop
Gives you directions or a subway route from point A to point B and gives you an accurate estimate of how long it will take. I use it at least once a day. - Yelp
Reviews on anything and everything. I love the augmented reality feature where you can hold the phone up and see which businesses are in each direction around you and what people are saying about them. - Menu Pages
NYC restaurant menus. Definitely my go-to when finding a place to eat.
Lara also tipped us off on her favorite iPhone accessory of the moment: Echo wool blend gloves. “They have electromagnetic fabric which allows you to use your iPhone (and more importantly your apps) while still keeping your hands warm!!”
