PUSH IT
Jewelry Designer Helen Ficalora gives us the skinny on “push” presents

Watches, diamond studs, initial charms. We love any excuse to get a new piece of jewelry. Which is why we kind of love the idea of a “push” present. Something to commemorate the birth of your child to keep with you forever. We caught up with Helen Ficalora, jeweler to the stars and to just about every new mom we know to get her take on this trend:
What do you think about the idea of a Push Present?
I wish it was happening when I had my children. It was a new idea for me, but I like it. Any reason for a new piece of jewelry is wonderful and to have it connected to the birth of your child is even more special.
Have you seen any new trends with Push Presents lately? Do you think women tend to pick out their own gifts or like to be surprised?
I think that “push” presents come from the dads, mostly. It seems like rings are a very popular push present. Rings tend to be a gift men give to women to mark occasions involving their commitment to the relationship which having a child certainly adds to also. I also find lots of alphabet charms get purchased even from a phone call from the delivery room. We see all the new dads in to collect the baby’s initials or to create a necklace for their wife on the birth of the first child. I love it because we get to see the photos of the new babies…
I am not sure how word gets around about “push” presents – men find out from their friends and family- some woman ask for a push present, but I think it is kind of a guy thing.
Which of your items tend to be purchased most by new moms?
The alphabet charms and the MOM charms are the first things they want when they have a baby. Many have been waiting to get it until the child is born. It’s either as a “push” present or a as an “I need to have this as a new mom” purchase.
Are there favorite pieces in your collection? What do you wear from your line everyday?
I love everything. I wear a lot of pieces. I have my family necklace with mine, my husband and my two sons initials on it, it has a small Montauk daisy with a diamond and a lotus flower charm. Then I have layers of necklaces that are meaningful to me. They remind me of things about myself or my family. I have stacks of rings on my fingers – I love jewelry!!!
Any new pieces coming out in the near future?
I have a miniature charms collection that is new and lots of fun to personalize the alphabet charms with. I have lots of new signet ring designs. I trip to one of my stores is well worth it- so many more pieces than I have on the website.
