PICTURE PERFECT
Capturing their best shot

Who isn’t always taking pictures of their kids? Wouldn’t it be great if the shots you took came out just like the well-seasoned photographers we hire?
We convinced Janine Memon-Dietz, owner of Saving Grace Photography to let us in on some professional tips:
- Know your camera. You don’t need an expensive camera to get beautiful images but if you have one, make sure you know how to use the different settings to get the most out of it.
- Find the light. Use large windows, soft shade and either early morning or the soft light of the pre-dusk hours. Place the sun behind them for beautiful backlighting or to the side for soft neutral lighting.
- Get down on their level — sit/kneel or squat. Put babies on beds with clean white sheets facing a large window. Play peek-a-boo with blankets.
- Keep the focus on your child and their expressions. Capture them playing or laughing or running or doing whatever they love. Fill the frame with their faces.
- Enjoy yourself. Trying to take the perfect picture of your own child can be stressful. Your child will pick up on the stress and react accordingly. If things don’t work out the way you planned, relax and go with the flow. Sometimes that’s when you end up with the best shots!
