BON VOYAGE
Travel tips & tricks from industry insiders

It’s that time of year again, when everyone kicks back, skips town and tries their best to hold on to the last few weeks of summer. We sat down with a few industry heavyweights to get the skinny on the way they roll.
Stephanie Johnson, go-to travel accessory mastermind, travels world-wide with her 15-month-old daughter Erela in tow.
“I love our clear tubes and always have one packed and ready to go with sunscreen for the family – the clear plastic makes it easy to see what’s inside and clean up any messy spills. I also use one of my jumbo cases for Erela on the plane. It’s a simple organizer for small books and airplane toys. Then, I toss them all in a large tote and having lots of little plastic pouches inside keeps everything organized. I even use a clear zip case as my wallet!”
Bobbi Brown, the most natural I’m not wearing any makeup make-up artist who created and suggests using her chic, TSA-approved “empties beauty on the go” kit says “Looking good when you’re on the go is easy if you keep it simple and organized.”
Jennifer Behr, hair accessory extraordinaire, is all about easy traveling.
“You don’t want to fuss with complicated beauty routines on vacation. Give your hair a vacation too – leave the hairdryer at home and pack a few soft headwraps to sweep your locks back on the beach and in the evening.”
Lizzie Scheck, jewelry designer to the stars (and even some commoners), weighs in on tangle free jewels.
“To prevent your necklaces from tangling, get mini Ziploc bags, and put one necklace in it’s own bag. Keep the lock closed and hang it slightly out of the bag, with the bag “zipped”. This way, when you get to your destination, everything is organized and tangle-free.”
Frederic Fekkai, uber-talented celebrity stylist with a strong cult following, is all about moisturizing.
“Once you are at your destination, it is good to alternate your everyday shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo (try my Fekkai Shea Butter Shampoo) to keep hair hydrated since flying takes moisture from the hair the same way it does the skin.”
Carol Mills, sister & partner-in-crime at Malia Mills Swimwear, firmly believes taking good care of your suits is the only way to go.
“Always pack 2 suits; the fibers in spandex and lycra only fully “recover” when they are totally dry. If you put on a damp suit, you are compromising the fit and durability of the fabric. After swimming, wear your suit in the shower, lather up and then take off your suit and rinse it. Never wash your suit in the washing machine. The agitation, even on a gentle cycle will twist and stretch the suit. Always hang it to dry on the bathroom rack. Do not dry in the sun or the dryer. The heat will ruin the fabric and elastic. Taking great care of your suits will make them last a long time.”
Nellie Partow, the next “IT” Fashion Designer, hates wrinkles.
“I travel so often with silk pieces, being that our collection consists of predominately silk based qualities. Silk can be a nightmare to pack given that it wrinkles so drastically and it’s not exactly practical to pack a steamer. Unpack your wrinkled garment right away and place it on a hanger. Then, run an extremely warm shower and hang the garment in the restroom, which essentially creates a steam room. This helps release the existing wrinkles.”
Maureen Kelly, the brains behind the beauty at Tarte Cosmetics, keeps hydrated while traveling.
“Before hopping on a plane I always moisturize — it’s the best way to beat the dehydrating effects of cabin pressure! Some of my favorite carry-on beauty products include Caudalie’s beauty elixir for a mid-flight spritz and tarte’s 24/7 lip sheer in champagne brunch to soothe my dry lips. My other travel must-haves are Susan Brown’s Baby Just For Mom Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer, a puff-reducing sleeping mask and our t-zone travel natural shine control-to-go.”
